Safety, Processing, and Sterilization
As an allograft (human-derived) product, safety is the top priority for DBM in 2026. Every lot undergoes rigorous donor screening for infectious diseases like HIV, Hepatitis, and Syphilis. The demineralization process itself provides an additional layer of safety; the acid wash is highly effective at inactivating bacteria and viruses. Furthermore, most DBM is terminally sterilized using Gamma irradiation or E-beam technology to ensure a Sterility Assurance Level (SAL) of $10^{-6}$.
Despite being a human tissue product, DBM has a very low risk of immunological rejection. The process of removing minerals and cellular debris also removes the major histocompatibility complexes (MHC) that usually trigger an immune response. By 2026, the industry has standardized the "Residual Calcium" levels—usually aiming for less than 2%—as this level has been found to be the "sweet spot" for maximizing the exposure of growth factors without destroying the collagen scaffold.
